Olive Burr Coffee Table with Cognac Epoxy

Root Wood of the Richest Kind

Burr and root wood is the most deeply figured part of an olive tree, and this slab shows why. Across the full 115 by 105 centimetre surface, knots cluster in dense, rounded eyes and fans that sweep in all directions at once; nowhere is there a quiet patch of straight grain. The colour ranges from pale caramel on the raised grain to deep reddish-brown in the hollows, edged with dark contours around every opening.

See-Through Cognac Epoxy

The open fissures and natural voids between the knots have not been filled flat or hidden, but poured full with a translucent, warm cognac-brown epoxy resin. Where the layer is thick, you can look straight through to the raw bed of the hollow beneath, complete with the copper and greenish weathering the timber took on over decades. The entire top has been sanded and polished to a glass-smooth finish, letting the light run in a single unbroken line across wood and resin alike.
