The bathroom has long ceased to be just a functional space to brush your teeth. It is where you start your day and where you wash away the hustle and bustle in the evening. More and more people are choosing to turn their bathroom into a true 'wellness sanctuary'. And what fits that better than the warmth, character and unique look of natural wood?
In this project, we take you on the extraordinary journey from a raw olive wood slab to a breathtaking, bespoke vanity top.
The start: Love at first sight
Everything starts at the source: the wood. This client came to us looking for something unique. Not a standard piece of furniture out of a box, but an item with a soul. During the selection process, their eye caught a robust piece of olive wood (see the 'before' photo).
Olive wood is known for its wild grain patterns, warm golden-brown tones and organic shapes. The raw slab was full of characterful features: natural holes, cracks and an organic edge that tells the story of the tree. Where some saw only "wood with holes", the client (and we!) saw a diamond in the rough.
The craft: Epoxy as the binding element
The challenge with such a characterful piece of wood is finding the balance between natural aesthetics and practical use in a bathroom. After all, you don't want your toothbrush falling into a hole in the wood.
This is where our craftsmanship comes in. To preserve the beautiful imperfections of the olive wood while making the top fully functional, we chose to treat it with epoxy. The open knots and natural cracks were carefully filled with a dark epoxy resin. This not only ensures a flat and usable surface, but also creates a stunning contrast. The dark epoxy makes the light, fiery grain of the olive wood pop even more.
The finish: Water-resistant and worry-free enjoyment
A wooden top in the bathroom often raises the question: "Is that really okay with all that moisture?" At iQonya, the answer is a resounding: Yes, provided it is treated properly.
After sanding and polishing the slab and the epoxy, we finished the piece with our improved, high-quality wood oil. This specific oil penetrates deep into the fibres, forming a protective layer that makes the wood completely water-repellent. Water droplets sit on the surface and do not soak in. This ensures the wood retains its colour and quality, even in the damp environment of a bathroom.
The result: A unique showpiece
The end result speaks for itself (see the 'after' photo). The olive wood top floats elegantly on the wall, forming the perfect base for the natural stone basin. The combination of the organic wood, the sleek white marble of the basin and the modern black tap creates a luxurious, serene atmosphere.
This isn't just a vanity unit; it's a piece of natural art that brings a smile to your face every single day.
