Bring Your Live Edge Table to Life: Wood Oil and Maintenance
A live edge table, epoxy table, or sturdy vanity top from iQonya is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a piece of nature in your home. Whether it’s the whimsical shapes of olive wood, the warm glow of cedar, or the unique grain of juniper: every piece of wood tells its own story.
To keep that story alive and protect your table from the wear and tear of everyday life, the right treatment is essential. In this blog, we dive into the world of enhanced wood oil. We’ll show you how to control the wood’s color—from light and natural to deep and dark—and how to keep your showpiece in top condition.
The Power of Enhanced Wood Oil
At iQonya, we swear by an enhanced wood oil that is completely natural. Many commercial oils are full of solvents that evaporate, leaving very little product on the wood. The oil we recommend and use consists of a special blend of boiled tung oil and sunflower oil.
Why is this important for your table?
-
100% Natural & Nourishing: The oil penetrates deep into the pores, nourishes the wood, and strengthens it.
-
No Solvents: Whatever you apply stays in the wood. It doesn’t evaporate, making it very economical to use.
-
Optimal Protection: It protects against moisture, weathering, and wood brittleness caused by UV radiation.
Show your true colors: Light, Natural, or Dark?
One of the best things about wood oil is that it allows you to customize the look and feel of your table. Wood is a living material and reacts to oil. As you can see from our color chart, the possibilities are endless. But how does that actually look on real wood?
We conducted a number of tests on our favorite types of wood (see the photos accompanying this article):
1. Juniper
Juniper is known for its fine, wild grain and light base color.
-
The effect: When we apply a transparent or slightly darker oil here, the grain really stands out. The grain becomes more pronounced, giving the wood an almost 3D effect. If you choose a “natural” oil with white pigment, it retains that soft, Scandinavian look.
2. Olive wood
Olive wood is naturally rich in color and character.
-
The effect: Oil on olive wood acts like a magnifying glass. The deep, honey-like tones become more intense and warmer. Would you prefer to avoid the wood turning too yellow or orange? In that case, we can use pigments to preserve the original, earthy tone.
3. Cedar
Cedar has that beautiful glow and a wonderful scent.
-
The result: You can choose to accentuate the red glow (for a warmer look) or tone it down for a modern, matte finish.
Care and Maintenance of Your Plant
You’ve found your dream table and chosen the perfect color. Now it’s time to keep it looking its best. Below is our complete guide to care and maintenance.
Daily care: Prevent stains
Your tree trunk or epoxy tabletop is a functional item. Food scraps, moisture, and water rings are to be expected, but stay vigilant.
-
Be careful with metal: Iron, metal cans, and cookie tins, in particular, can cause black stains when they come into contact with the tannic acid in wood. Bloodstains can also leave permanent dark marks.
-
Cleaning: Wipe the tabletop dry and clean as soon as possible after use. Use a soft cotton or microfiber cloth. Always wipe in the direction of the wood grain.
-
Stains: Remove them immediately with a damp cloth. Is the tabletop very dirty? If so, use the mild cleaner from our care kit. Never use harsh or abrasive cleaners!
Tip: If you spill something, clean it up right away so it doesn’t dry out or get sticky. This will prevent you from having to scrape it off and damaging the oil layer.
Annual maintenance: The major service
For the first six months after purchase, your tabletop is protected by the topcoat applied by iQonya. To maintain this protection against moisture and dirt, we recommend re-oiling the tabletop annually (depending on the intensity of use).
Procedure:
-
Application: Apply a thin coat of oil to the wood using a brush, roller, or cloth.
-
Let it soak in: Let the oil soak in for 5 to 20 minutes.
-
Note: Treat areas that absorb the oil quickly (dry spots) again immediately. Pay special attention to the ends, knots, and cracks.
-
Polishing (Crucial!): Wipe the surface with a clean, dry cotton cloth. Always use a fresh, dry section of the cloth. No oil should remain on the surface, otherwise it won’t dry properly and will remain sticky.
-
Epoxy: Do you have an epoxy table? Wipe the epoxy surface with a lint-free cloth to remove any traces of oil.
-
Drying: The drying time is approximately 24 hours. Do not use the furniture again until this time has elapsed, and avoid getting the table wet during the first few weeks.
⚠️ Important Safety Warning: Spontaneous Combustion
Please note: A cleaning cloth containing drying oil can spontaneously ignite due to heat buildup if you throw it away in a ball. The solution: Let the used cloths dry completely unfolded (outdoors or in a well-ventilated area). Once hardened and dry, the rags can be safely disposed of with household waste.
Signs of Use and Prevention
Wood is a living material. Over time, stains, rings, dents, or scratches may appear. We call these signs of wear, and they give the table character. However, the more you use the tabletop, the faster these marks will appear.
Our prevention tips:
-
Always use a tablecloth, placemats, and coasters for pots, glasses, and cups during meals.
-
Place a protective mat on the table if children are playing or doing homework.
