A Tribute in Epoxy: How a Photographer Lives On in an Epoxy Resin Table
Sometimes a table is more than just a place to eat. Sometimes it is a monument, a tangible memory of a loved one and a life full of passion.
At iQonya, we recently received one of the most special and emotional commissions in our history. A woman approached us with a wish: she wanted a dining table made in memory of her late husband. He was a photographer through and through. His cameras weren't just gadgets; they were the instruments through which he saw and captured the world.
Her question touched us deeply: "Can you immortalise his cameras, which mark his career, in a table?"
The Design: A Timeline in the River
For this project, we chose Juniper wood (Juniper). This wood species is known for its robust character, warm colours and striking, organic shapes. Just like a human life, this wood is full of unique twists and patterns.
The process began with carefully selecting the planks. We laid them out so that a natural 'river' was created in the middle. But instead of leaving it empty, this became the resting place for his life's work.
In the photo, you can see the composition: the bodies and lenses he worked with for years, carefully positioned between the banks of the juniper wood. From analogue classics to their digital successors, they tell the story of his journey as a photographer.
The Process: Immortalised in an Epoxy Resin Table
Encasing such personal and complex objects requires absolute precision. Every button, every lens and every viewfinder had to remain perfectly visible, free of air bubbles and at just the right depth.
We chose a clear epoxy with a subtle tint, reminiscent of deep water. As we poured the resin, the cameras were slowly enclosed. It is a process of preservation; time is stood still. The cameras are now safely stored, protected from dust and decay, yet still in full view.
As you can see in the detailed photos, it looks as if the cameras are floating. The green and blue tones of the epoxy form a beautiful contrast with the black equipment and the warm, orange-brown wood.
The Result: A Table Full of Stories
The end result is a breathtaking River Table that now takes pride of place in the widow's home. The juniper wood has been sanded smooth and oiled, bringing the rich grain to life.
Every time she sits at the table now – for a cup of coffee, dinner or a chat with friends – the memories of him and his passion are close by. It is not an "in memoriam" tucked away in a cabinet, but a celebration of his life at the heart of the home.
Giving Memories a Second Life
At iQonya, we often say "Giving Wood a Second Life". With this project, we were able to add an extra dimension to that: giving a second life to cherished memories.
